E-commerce email open rate: 2026 benchmark by vertical
Open rate no longer means what it used to. Here are the real 2026 benchmarks and how to read them correctly.
E-commerce email open rate 2026: why benchmarks have changed
Since Apple launched Mail Privacy Protection (MPP) in 2021, roughly 40% of emails are opened by an Apple “bot” that pre-fetches images. Result: the open rate reported in Klaviyo is no longer the real read rate.
Concretely:
- An Apple Mail recipient counts as “opened” even if they never opened the email
- Your Klaviyo KPIs are therefore inflated by 10 to 25% depending on your audience mix
- Comparing your open rate to pre-2022 benchmarks makes no sense
That’s why we work with up-to-date 2026 benchmarks that account for this MPP reality.

How to read your open rate correctly in 2026
Here are 4 rules to interpret your open rate in the post-MPP context.
Rule 1, Compare to your baseline, not to raw benchmarks
Your open rate vs. benchmark matters less than your 6-month trend. If your open rate was 42% six months ago and it’s 35% today, you have a problem, even if 35% stays within market average.
Rule 2, Segment by mailbox provider
In Klaviyo, look at your open rate separately for:
- Gmail (real open rate, not polluted by MPP)
- Apple Mail (open rate inflated by MPP)
- Outlook
- Yahoo
If your Gmail open rate drops while your Apple open rate stays stable, you have a real deliverability problem.
Rule 3, Cross-check with click rate
An open rate going up and a click rate going down = MPP polluting your numbers, no real engagement.
An open rate going down and a click rate staying stable = your engaged recipients are still engaged, but MPP captures less (audience shift).
Rule 4, Engagement cohort first
Your overall open rate means nothing if you send to different cohorts week over week. Always look at:
- Open rate of the “30-day engaged” cohort
- Open rate of the “90-day engaged” cohort
If the first drops, you have a copy/subject line problem. If the second drops, it’s list fatigue.
The levers to lift your open rate
By observed impact, in order:
-
Tighten segmentation: send to 30-day engaged first, gradually broaden only when content justifies it. Typical impact: +5 to +12 open rate points.
-
Improve deliverability: clean inactives > 12 months, authenticate SPF/DKIM/DMARC, monitor your Sender Reputation score. Typical impact: +3 to +8 open rate points.
-
Vary subject line structures: move from 4 subject templates to 8–10, alternate them. Typical impact: +2 to +5 open rate points.
-
Optimize preview text (preheader): fill the preheader with an intriguing complement, not a cliché like “view this email in browser.” Typical impact: +1 to +3 open rate points.
-
Test the sender: “Brand” vs. “First name from Brand” vs. “Brand Team” — the sender matters as much as the subject in some verticals. Typical impact: +2 to +5 open rate points.
The alert threshold we recommend
If your campaign open rate drops below 30% for 4 consecutive weeks, that’s a structural warning. Likely causes, to investigate in order:
- Over-broadening: you may have widened your send list too much
- Deliverability: a domain or ISP is sending you to spam
- List fatigue: you’re sending too often to the same contacts
- Content misalignment: your current offer no longer matches initial expectations
