Average e-commerce email click rate: 2026 benchmark
Click rate has become the most reliable KPI in your Klaviyo. Here are the real benchmarks and how to compare yourself.
Average e-commerce email click rate: why it became KPI #1 in 2026
Since MPP (Apple Mail Privacy Protection), open rate is polluted. Click rate, on the other hand, is clean: a click requires real human intent.
It has become the most reliable KPI for measuring the health of your Klaviyo in 2026.
If you could only track one engagement KPI, this would be it.

Click rate vs. Click-to-open rate (CTOR): which to use?
You’ll see two KPIs in Klaviyo:
- Click rate:
unique clicks / emails sent - Click-to-open rate (CTOR):
unique clicks / emails opened
In 2026, use click rate, not CTOR. Why?
CTOR uses open rate in the denominator, which is polluted by MPP. A falling CTOR may just mean “more fake opens,” not “less engagement.”
Click rate has no pollutant in its denominator. It really measures the health of your list.
The 5 click rate levers (by impact order)
1. CTA visual hierarchy
The CTA must be:
- Visible in under 2 seconds (1 swipe max on mobile)
- A contrasting color vs. the rest
- At least 44px tall (mobile tap target)
- With a clear action verb (not “View,” but “Discover my selection”)
Typical impact of a CTA fix: +0.5 to +1.5 points of click rate.
2. Contextual merchandising
If you send the same 4-product grid to every recipient, you’re losing 30–50% of potential click rate. Klaviyo’s dynamic merchandising (based on last product viewed, favorite category, etc.) is underused.
Typical impact: +0.8 to +1.5 points of click rate.
3. Subject ↔ content ↔ CTA consistency
If your subject promises “10 new arrivals,” the email should show all 10, and the CTA should land on the “New arrivals” page. Any break = 20–40% lost clicks.
Typical impact: +0.3 to +1 point of click rate.
4. Mobile-first
70% of clicks happen on mobile. If your template:
- Forces pinch-zoom
- Hides the CTA below the mobile fold
- Has images that take > 3 sec to load
you’re losing clicks. Typical impact of a mobile refactor: +0.4 to +1 point of click rate.
5. Preview text setting expectations
The preheader (preview text) primes the click by setting expectations before opening. A well-written preheader can lift click rate by 0.2 to 0.5 points without changing the content.
The “why is my click rate low” diagnostic
If your click rate is below 1.5% on campaigns, follow this protocol.
Step 1, Compare by cohort. If the “30-day engaged” cohort is above 3% and the “180-day engaged” cohort is below 0.5%, you’re diluting. Tighten your segmentation.
Step 2, Compare by campaign type. If your “promotion” campaigns click at 3% but your “content” campaigns at 0.8%, you have a value proposition problem on non-promo content.
Step 3, Compare by template. If a specific template (say “weekly newsletter”) systematically underperforms, it’s a design/hierarchy problem. Refactor it.
Step 4, Compare by CTA placement. Klaviyo lets you track which CTA gets clicked. If your “discover the collection” CTAs click 5x more than your “buy now” CTAs, you know what your recipients want.
The alert threshold
If your campaign click rate drops below 1% for 4 consecutive weeks, it’s a structural alert. Treat it as a priority — click rate is harder to lift back up than open rate.
